Hard fought battle for the Davison Cup

Newbiggin are this year’s winners of the Davison Cup after coming out on top of a closely fought contest which took place at Newcastle United Golf Club. On the same day that Mo Farah was winning the Great North Run, which started just yards from the Town Moor course, another close run thing was taking place on the Moor with Close House and Newbiggin fighting it out to win this year’s Davison Cup

James Simpson and Craig Penny led off with two cracking drives down the 1st which set the tone for an exciting afternoon of Hadrian League golf. Although James battled back to be level at the turn from being three down, he wasn't able to keep up with the relentless golf that we know Craig in capable of which eventually saw Craig win 3 and 2. One in the bag for Newbiggin.

Chris Hunter proved that he is still capable of excellent golf as he resisted everything that Merrill Lansbury threw at him. Merrill drew level with a great putt at the 17th and then with everything to play for at the last proceeded to hit his tee shot out of bounds at the 18th which opened the door for Chris and he proceeded to slam it shut to beat Merrill one up. Back to all square

The 3rd match turned out to be a game of swings and roundabouts with Wayne Marshall calling upon all his experience to battle it out with Ryan Luke. The match ebbed and flowed but Wayne's calm approach saw him edging two ahead of Ryan at the 16th. Back came Ryan winning the 17th and down the 18th there was everything to play for. Once again Wayne's experience was enough for him to hold on for another win for Newbiggin

Phil Rawlings has been a welcome newcomer to the Newbiggin ranks this season and has been virtually ever present. He came up against another newcomer to the Close House team in Imran Aziz who himself is a regular in the Close House team. Both players are also prolific winners! A battle of the big hitters this proved to be another titanic struggle with Imran's power coming to fore and he had moved to three up by half way however Phil is nothing if not determined and he chipped away at Imran's lead and by the 15th they were all square. The pressure was starting to tell now and at the seventeenth both players had great drives. Phil put his second shot on the green but a good way from the pin. Imran's second shot was poor and he put it in the bunker. He proceeded to take a six whilst Phil three putted to just edge the hole with a five!

Close House showed faith in their young players and sent Ben Crawford out to take on the multi-talented (eating, drinking, golfing!) Russell Jacques. Many much more experienced players than Ben have came a cropper at the hands of Russell however Ben was not intimidated and the game was tight from the beginning. A birdie from Ben at the 17th meant he edged one up going down the 18th.

The last two games were both now on the 18th with Imran and Phil approaching the green when Russell and Ben teed off and they were side by side with their tee shots. They were side by side again with their second shots - both in the same greenside bunker, and again out of the bunker and 10 feet short. However by this time Phil had sealed a win over Imran with a nerve jangling five footer for par which meant that it was Newbiggin's match and Russell, ever the gentleman, conceded the game to Ben.

A truly exciting match and a joy to watch for the unbiased golf fan, hard fought however in an excellent spirit. Well done to both teams and also to Newcastle United who presented their course in a splendid condition worthy of a final.
